Political power seems to be shifting from nation states back to city states. This is a reversal of the ancient shift from city states to nation states. Example: Seattle metro is far different from the rest of Washington. Red state vs blue state. There could be greater political tension in the future as national governments try to keep their countries united while the various populations grow more culturally divided.

How California’s Online Education Pilot Will End College As We Know It | TechCrunch
Today, the largest university system in the world, the California State University system, announced a pilot for $150 lower-division online courses at one its campuses–a move that spells the end of higher education as we know it.
