I keep imagining large spinning cylinders spinning, holding life inside, flexible shielding on the outside hulls, and flexible tubes connecting these cylinders, all joined with flexible structures. What I mean flexible is strong structures with joints and shock absorbers that would possibly resist impact better than solid sturdy structures. Large automated robots could continue to gather resources and add more cylinders.
Anyway, with regard to space civilizations, I think each cylinder would hold the population of a small city, I guess. Maybe the people would get tired of seeing the same people or the same kinds of people, and think about the diversity we have on Earth, as well as the diversity of landscapes. Does it take being away from it for a long time to really appreciate it?
I understand getting fed up with society and wanting to be alone or with people who think like you. Trust me, the people who have the same beliefs and values will tick you off even more because you are more likely to be around them more often than others. For those who can’t stand the rules of civilization, you have the desert and in the future you’ll have space ships, but I don’t think you’ll like space cities very much.
