It’s called the “Gateway to the Underworld” by local Yakutians. It’s a giant Siberian crater in the coldest area of the world

Almost unrelated to this post, I think too much video gaming as a kid has created a lot of angry men without enough social skills.

Too much at the worst possible age may have negative consequences.

People who think we’ll just become more creative and find other jobs to do – don’t really understand the potential of AI.

AI is not just a new form of technology, but a brand new class of capital which automates the last parts of humanity: thinking.

This political interference can cause national security problems.

The Defense Department, long in the vanguard in dealing with climate change, may see its latest plan defunded.

Wow. I was listening to KBCS when I heard her on the radio, and thought I was listening to Wanda Sykes at first. You might think “I don’t want to be preached at,” but this is entertaining, educational, insightful, and really worth listening to.

As much as I dislike that a slight majority of the UK decided to leave the EU, I think I understand. It’s not just bigotry and feeling threatened by foreigners, it’s the feeling of loss of cultural identity.
When you think of the UK, there’s lots of history and a well established identity that you can easily picture in your mind. The older Brits wanted to preserve that image and the traditions and culture.
Where’s the line between bigotry and isolationism, and just wanting to preserve cultural heritage?
Often, they are coupled together. In the South (USA), many whites want to hold on to a cultural identity (Confederate) that has been coupled with oppression of blacks and other people. I’m not sympathizing with them. They are clearly wrong for wanting to hold onto that. However, I do feel a bit sorry for them for not being able to move on and accept that things have changed and trying to go back does more harm. They can’t see it within themselves create a new inclusive society or join the rest of society. They see themselves as a bruised, oppressed, and separate culture who are entitled to something. Maybe like in the UK?
