I saw this link that I clicked on when reading a Salon article. DISCLAIMER: I’m reading it with a self-reflective point of view about what I was like before marriage and getting a feminist’s perspective about why I was wrong.
Something that I’m not proud of is one of these criticisms: “Nice Guys™ seem to regard a man’s relationship with a woman as successful or valuable only if it is romantic or sexual in nature, i.e. friendship is failure.”
I’ve thought about that before reading this article and thought this is why women get harassed and feel negative politics at work. It’s horrible how society treats less attractive women like they’ve done something wrong or have to prove their worth, because men tend to value women according to their looks – but that goes beyond Nice Guys to most guys and even women towards other women as well.
I feel bad that I did that in the past and on a primitive, instinctive level I have a small tendency to value women accordingly (in my mind) – even though I’m married! That’s does not mean I want to act on it in any way whatsoever, not only because I value my marriage and my family, but I know that women are equal and deserve to be treated as equal (just as if they were guys) and without any expectations in return (another reference to the Nice Guy syndrome).
On a related note, a lot of people, men and women and especially in the city, tend to view others with the selfish perception of “what can you do for me.” If you go to a business networking event, participate, and listen in, you’ll witness this in a fast paced setting. I don’t want to view people that way, though I do realize you have to choose your friends and associates wisely.
