In a post about Facebook making smartphones obsolete and it has to do with AR and AI, I have to disagree with Mark Zuckerberg.

First, I think most people will be reluctant to wear glasses (most of the time) who don’t already wear glasses, and the potential of AR will not entice most people to wear them. I can’t stand contact lenses, because they bother my eyes too much. People who have big hair aren’t going to wear goggles much either, because it will mess up their hair.

Second, speaking with an AI is a poor interface compared to a smartphone application. Speaking with an AI is a 1D interface, while the smartphone apps are a 2D UI. You can do things a lot faster and less confusing with a 2D interface than a 1D interface. With AR, you have the potential for 3D UIs, but that potential still has to overcome the reluctance of wearing glasses.

If I had a digital lens to replace my biological lens, I would definitely go for that. I’m not so sure about the neurological link with a computer. I don’t want my brain getting hacked.
