It’s a good philosophical read. I like how the author describes the criticisms of liberalism in very fair terms.
I remember a general guideline about philosophy: never take any philosophy to an extreme. I think this applies very well to liberal capitalism. However, the right thinks liberalism has been extreme in regard to social liberalism, and they are mistaken. It’s not that the protection of individual rights from church and paternalism that have fragmented communities, it’s a natural instinct towards individual autonomy that is allowed to flourish without guidance and greater communal benefit which has caused communities to fragment.
People will seek more community involvement when they see more of benefit to being involved within the community rather than being alone. Binging on Netflix and playing video games is very tempting, but it’s also very isolating.
I get a little frustrated by the vast market of gadgets and apps that offer the world at your fingertips and social connections through messages and videos. It’s very socially isolating, even with the “social app” label.
I’m not advocating restrictions on individual freedoms to have access to these kinds of products. I’m advocating for an understanding of the effects of individualism on our happiness and social connections, and that when taken to an extreme like it is doing now, it hurts our society very much and increases depression and loneliness.
I sometimes think about how when people were made to depend upon each other through their circumstance and before the industrial revolution. They faced hardships together and had stronger social connections and maybe even more happiness, but there was also stronger paternalistic control over people’s lives as well. Conservatives see this correlation as a good reason for why there should be more paternalistic control of society.
I disagree. I think individual rights from oppression are of utmost importance. The isolating effects of technological access and market abundance can be mitigated with guidance, encouragement, and programs from government, community organizations, and nonprofits alike. We first have to recognize that social isolation is a growing problem and that the liberal market is not going to fix it, like so many other problems that it fails to address on it’s own.

Critics on the left and right are waging war on liberalism. And liberals dont seem to have a good defense.
