Ken Burnside says: “I did not know Richard Rose, but I grew up around men like him. “White men who served in the military, thought that having served made them Better Men, and while they hated their time in uniform, once they got out, pined for the camaraderie of doing things with their battle brothers that could save the world, or save America. “Inevitably, they become a certain variety of Republican Individualist, scornful of people who live in cities, afraid for their gun rights, waiting for the Radical Left to take up arms so they can finally kill them in an orgy of bloodshed. “Usually homophobic, would be transphobic if they thought about it, and their social activity centered on trucks, guns and bars. “And if you were their friend, and called on them for help, they’d be there at 3 AM to help you find a missing farm animal, fix a flat tire, tow you out of a ditch. And you’d buy them a round at the local watering hole and tell others about the good deed they did, and the matter’d be settled. “Their political ethos boils down to “Don’t tell me I’m wrong, just leave me alone.” Usually, they end up moving some place rural after the second divorce, and kind of curdle inwards, because they feel the strongest part of their life is already past them. “You cannot open the eyes of a man determined to preserve his blindness. They cannot bring themselves to care about a problem that doesn’t concern them or someone else they know personally; their wits and their upbringing just won’t let them. “Richard Rose served two terms in Afghanistan. In his time, to quote Shakespeare, he’s played many parts. “On this stage, having made his exit, unwillingly, remember he still has a part to play: “Cautionary warning. “If someone *like them* dies of coronavirus for these attitudes, perhaps others will take masking up seriously and save other lives. “So, I come to neither bury nor praise Richard Rose. He’s a man who put on a uniform to save lives, and can save more lives after he’s died. “Have no glee for the passing of any man not your sworn enemy.”
