I don’t understand why this isn’t bigger news. A pharmaceutical research company, Revel Pharmaceuticals, is developing enzymes that clean up and repair stiffened collagen proteins in the extracellular matrix (ECM) that give our cells flexible support. What this could do is extend life spans by making arteries more flexible (reducing heart attacks) and get rid of wrinkles (for real this time). That means a 60 year old person in 2030 could look and (possibly) feel like a 25 year old person!
Glucose (sugar molecule) binds to collagen (protein fibers) forming cross links and stiffens them, reducing elasticity and causes wrinkles and high blood pressure. The ECM is long lasting unlike most of the other tissues in our bodies. So when there’s a problem with the structure, it stays in the body for a very long time. The fibers just don’t get replaced like the cells do.
There is a pill by Juvify that you can now take that will slow the aging process so that not only do you stay healthy longer and lose weight, but also slow down wrinkling, thus extending your youthful look, but it won’t make you look any younger.
Revel is doing the really exciting research on using enzymes to do the actual repair work on AGEs (stiffened collagen). Unfortunately, phase 1 trials won’t be ready to start till 2024. #antiaging
