Just saw Self/Less. It was better than the reviews gave it. What I don’t like is Hollywood’s portrayal of transhumanists being mad scientists and without ethics. Remember Transcendence? Johny Depp’s character might one day be the human super intelligence that does battle with SkyNet over the internet. It will certainly be worse than a troll flame war on YouTube or 4Chan.

I’ve had this idea of moving mountains (literally with large excavators) to carve out a 10 mile wind path through mountain ridges. Why? Mountains create rain shadows and can block moisture on the other side. Therefore, there’s less rain for forests, farms, and life in general. Depleted water resources will be a very important issue soon.

I thought about an unintended consequence of this geo-engineering. Mountains are like big icebergs in the crust floating above the mantle. If the top is removed, less weight will hold it down and the immense pressures of the mantle will push it back up (maybe even quicker than than the top was removed), so there would be new mountains replacing the old ones (except with incredible upwards thrust from below the earth).

Even worse is what could happen after that. With the pressure (below the crust) relieved that would allow pressure in surrounding areas to balance it out even more. Say this project was performed east of Issaquah, WA. The Seattle region is within an earthquake zone. Massive cataclysmic earthquakes could be set off within Seattle when the pressure re-balances below the crust.

The shores of southern Tasmania look like a scene from another planet. They have drawn the admiration of scientists and photographers alike.
