I like that we have a democracy, but I wonder if there’s something better. We seemed so proud of our democracy and paranoid that it will be taken away, that our imaginations have shut off about what could be better.
Voter turn out is often low. Some countries have to enforce voting to get people to care enough to vote. It’s no guarantee that an informed populace will make the best decisions. There are a lot of smart and educated people who believe in very stupid things, such as libertarianism.
There’s no guarantee that a country run by smart engineers will build the best possible society either. China is run by a political system of corrupt engineers who care about political stability, but not about human welfare.

I’m having a brain-fireworks-explosion (and geek admiration) moment after doing a search for hypernym trees. I’m researching ways of automating a taxonomy of words from general to specific – similar to that of DMOZ ODP. I should have been a computational linguist. I feel like it’s getting closer to the day when computers really understand meaning in human speech.

Most people are thankful that we get two extra days off this week. The name Thanksgiving seems outdated to me. It should be National Day of Gratitude and the day after should be National Day of Sorrow (for the things our ancestors did), or should that replace Columbus Day?
