Even when there was, objectively speaking, very little to celebrate, supporting the Peruvian national team felt necessary to me, a way of reminding myself who I was.

A metaphor for our dysfunctional politics: Republicans are abusive fathers, the poor are the children to these abusive fathers, and Democrats are case managers for Child Protective Services.
Republicans think that by beating the poor that they’ll make the poor stronger. They employ the poor children in their shops, give them pennies at the end of the day, and spend the rest on boos and gambling with their buddies at the end of the day. If the poor ask for more money, they get told just be thankful you have a job.
Republicans brainwash their children into thinking Democrats are vile demons that eat little children. So when the case manager comes to visit, the children don’t want to even talk to those that want to help them.
