White Noise and Signals and QAnon
I have a white noise machine to help me sleep at night. I awake easily to the sound of the house creaking, the heater turning on, the weather, and even my own snoring. SOMETIMES, I hear strange things with the white noise machine, but the machine only makes a constant sound like a fan. I can almost hear voices and I wonder if it’s my daughter. No, she’s asleep. I turn off the machine … nothing.
It’s not the machine. It’s my brain. The brain is like a pattern recognition machine. It’s constantly looking for patterns in things, even if there are no real patterns. So my brain is putting together little bits of static sound and making a pattern where there is nothing and telling me it heard something, a voice, a signal.
There are people who put together pieces of random information together and think they’ve found something that experts missed. They found the clues. They’re so remarkable and novel! Just wait till they tell the world. The truth will finally be revealed. They’ll be famous. No? Why aren’t other people listening? Sheeple!
I have a friend who showed me pictures on her phone of various things as proof of something, and I’m thinking and asking her as politely as I can what does this have to do with that? Why is it special? Don’t you think the media would have been all over it? Don’t you think Fox News would have wasted no chance to get dirt on Biden? “You can’t trust the media. Fox News is in bed with the Democrats.” Really, how often do they praise Democrats vs Republicans?
Conspiracy theorists are making signals out of noise and they’re telling other people about what they’ve discovered. They just create more noise on social media and real signals get lost in the noise.
