It’s not elitism, it’s classism. I’m putting it out there anyway.
It amazes me how many people in modern times believe the Earth is flat. This makes me think citizenship should have at least two levels. If people are too stupid to understand basic science and separate fact from fiction, I don’t think they should be allowed to vote.
Hold on there! Is this an attack on democracy from a liberal? It’s an admission that democracy as structured presently has its flaws. Isn’t this like the society in ancient Greece or the 3/4 vote of free black men in the early U.S. Constitution? Kind of. There’s more to my idea that would make it more fair for everyone while at the same time providing a great incentive for people to maintain a healthy lifestyle and educated mind.
I think that to have the right to vote, the right to free speech, and the right to privacy, a person should be of sound mind and body. (I don’t think anyone should have the right to own weapons.) People who don’t have critical thinking skills should not be deciding who gets elected. Gluttons, wasteful people, and those struggling with addictions are not of sound mind and body, and if they can’t make the right decisions in their own personal lives, I don’t think they should be deciding what’s right for everyone else.
This is not an attack on people based on economic class, race, religion, gender, creed, age, nor sexual orientation. All of those should be protected in the constitution. There would be an exception of physical capacity for disabled and elderly people, but they should at least have critical thinking skills.
How would a person who doesn’t have the right to vote attain the right to vote, and would the state pass laws to prevent them from achieving voting status? After reaching the age of 18, it should be every citizen’s RIGHT TO FREE HIGHER EDUCATION. It should be their decision to go for it and achieve voting status.
What would prevent the state from abusing these second class citizens? As in Germany, every person should have the right to be treated with DIGNITY, and that even includes prisoners.
What about those gluttons, wasteful people, and those struggling with addictions? What would prevent politicians from abusing this demographic? Everyone should have the RIGHT TO FREE HEALTH CARE, including counseling, addiction treatment, mental therapy, and physical therapy. By making everyone pass a BMI test and drug test for first class citizenship, it will greatly improve the health of the nation and lower the costs of health care for society. There should be very restrictive laws against or higher taxes on junk food and unhealthy food and beverages.
These are radical and controversial ideas and I’m very doubtful they would gain enough traction for any nation to have to courage to implement them in their constitutions.
