I have a great fascination with astronomy and the possibility of exploring and terraforming other worlds, but another part of me questions why. What is it that excites our curiosity and imagination?
In the majority of cases, we’re probably going to find sterile and non-habitable planets. Most of space is empty and harsh, like the Sahara desert or Antarctica but without breathable air and having dangerous cosmic rays. So we’re probably going to need to construct those habitats. I remember reading an online comment, “if you want to get away, you can dig a big whole in the middle of nowhere and achieve the same effect, but with a much less expensive cost.” I think it’s more than just wanting to get away from the ills of society though.
My question to the group here is, what is it that we hope to find or create?
