Good points, and there are more in the radio segment you can hear, but here are two that I’m focused on: 1) People are more racially tolerant when they feel optimistic, but become more tribal when they are worried. 2) Center-left Democrats abandoned labor in favor of the top 25 %, and now it’s payback. Then they cling to identity politics and say it is racism which allow them to blame the deplorables.

I agree with both points, but for #2, I wonder how is it that Democrats get blamed for supporting globalism and Republicans don’t. Republicans in Congress were all in favor of the TPP, and most of them were re-elected. Is it that the voters just look to the figure heads (president and presidential candidates)? Maybe it’s because the voters in their districts aren’t as educated and well informed as the voters in more liberal districts. Maybe the racist straw man and dog whistle politics that Republicans play balances out some sort of tribal anxiety. http://www.wnyc.org/story/far-rights-rise-around-world
