There’s this bright kid in her class, named Peter. He’s a sweet and articulate redneck. The teacher in this class tries to meet this kid halfway and find common ground, but he’s steadfast in “he knows where he stands.” She thinks that he’s an independent thinker though misguided. I read through the article and his essay, and what I got from it is two things: 1) He firmly believes what his parents and fellow rednecks believe. 2) He recites the slick narratives and soundbites from conservative media.
These people have been voting in conservatives for years and look where it got them. The conservative politicians will blame the federal guv’ment and all those liberal outsiders for all of their troubles instead of taking responsibility and trying something different. They want to hold onto tradition on not change with the times, while the world and economies are changing around them. The world is leaving them behind because they choose to stay behind and lock out everyone else, and then they blame the outsiders for their troubles. http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2017/01/donald-trump-2016-election-oklahoma-working-class

I asked my student why he voted for Trump. The answer was thoughtful, smart, and terrifying.
